Job Description
The Peer Support role provides essential supports within both the Radius clinic and the Supervised Consumption Site (SCS). The Peer Support Worker will provide coverage in a variety of roles throughout our building, and in all cases will be our first point of contact for clients as they access Radius services.
The Peer Support Worker works at the front-line, establishing relationships and rapport with clients. Within the clinic space, Peer Support Workers will be responsible for monitoring and supervising common client space, screening and triaging clients for entry into our facility, and working with the clinic teams and care providers.
Within the SCS, the Peer Support Worker will provide direct client care to program participants accessing the consumption site. Emphasis will be placed on forming relationships with clients, establishing rapport, supervising and monitoring substance use, and assisting and treating potential signs of overdose as clinically indicated. Peer Support Workers will also facilitate the connection of clients between the SCS and all programs at Radius, with the goal of allowing the client to move along the spectrum of care towards recovery.
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintain a safe and quiet environment for service users.
- Build positive relationships with service users.
- Provide referrals to additional support services when needed.
- Educate and counsel service users on safer drug use, harm reduction, and sexual health.
- Provide training on overdose prevention, including Naloxone use and the take-home Naloxone kit.
- Assist in overdose emergencies, following the nurse’s direction.
- Support the nurse in monitoring service users and raise any medical concerns as needed.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Current Basic Cardiac Life Support – Healthcare Provider (BCLS-HCP) certification.
- Police Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check.
- Child Intervention Record Check.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
- Experience working with diverse and vulnerable populations.
- Ability to collaborate within a multidisciplinary team.
- Knowledge of Trauma-Informed Care, Harm Reduction, and Social Determinants of Health.
- A non-judgmental, empathetic approach to working with service users.
- Ability to work within a harm reduction framework.
- Patience and understanding when interacting with individuals facing addiction or behavioral issues.
Preferred:
- Experience in mental health, addictions, emergency care, or harm reduction.
- Training in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI).
- Mental Health First Aid and Applied Suicide Intervention Training.
- Understanding of the healthcare challenges faced by Indigenous populations.
- Familiarity with homelessness-related issues.
- Knowledge of local social support services in Edmonton and surrounding areas.
- Ability to lift up to 20kg, if required.
Skills and Competencies:
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to manage conflicting priorities.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and within a multidisciplinary team.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- In-depth understanding of trauma-informed care and harm reduction principles.
