Job Description:

The Peer Support role provides essential supports within Radius’ programs and services. The Peer Support Worker will provide coverage in a variety of roles throughout their assigned program, and in all cases will be our first point of contact for clients as they access Radius services.

The Peer Support Worker works at the front-line, establishing relationships and rapport with clients. Within the space, Peer Support Workers will be responsible for monitoring and supervising common client space, screening and triaging clients for entry into our facility, and working with the teams to ensure day to day operations run smoothly.

 

Key Responsibilities:

•    Maintain a safe and quiet environment for clients.

•    Build positive relationships with clients.

•    Provide referrals to additional support services when needed.

•    Educate and counsel service users on resource options.

•    Provide training on overdose prevention, including Naloxone use and the take-home Naloxone kit.

•    Assist in overdose emergencies, following the nurse’s direction.

•    Support the team in monitoring clients and raise any concerns as needed.

•    Assist in day to day tasks or projects as assigned.

Qualifications:

Required:

•    Current Basic Cardiac Life Support – Healthcare Provider (BCLS-HCP) certification.

•    Police Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check.

•    Child Intervention Record Check.

•    Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.

•    Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.

•    Experience working with diverse and vulnerable populations.

•    Ability to collaborate within a multidisciplinary team.

•    Knowledge of Trauma-Informed Care, Harm Reduction, and Social Determinants of Health.

•    A non-judgmental, empathetic approach to working with service users.

•    Ability to work within a harm reduction framework.

•    Patience and understanding when interacting with individuals facing addiction or behavioral issues.

Preferred:

•    Experience in mental health, addictions, emergency care, or harm reduction.

•    Training in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI).

•    Mental Health First Aid and Applied Suicide Intervention Training.

•    Understanding of the healthcare challenges faced by Indigenous populations.

•    Familiarity with homelessness-related issues.

•    Knowledge of local social support services in Edmonton and surrounding areas.

•    Ability to lift up to 20kg, if required.

Skills and Competencies:

•    Strong problem-solving skills and ability to manage conflicting priorities.

•    Ability to work effectively both independently and within a multidisciplinary team.

•    Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

•    In-depth understanding of trauma-informed care and harm reduction principles.
