Role Summary

The Health Care Aide (CLHA) plays a key hands on support role, working closely with medical office assistants, nurses, providers, and the clinic team to support client care, clinic flow, and a welcoming environment. This role supports daily operations through direct client assistance and practical care tasks, with a focus on individuals facing complex health and social challenges.

Hours: 1.0 FTE Monday-Friday 12:00pm-8:00pm

Key Responsibilities

Direct Client Care & Support

•    Assist clients with personal care needs as appropriate, including showering, hygiene support, and comfort measures

•    Support vital signs collection (e.g., blood pressure, temperature, pulse, oxygen saturation) as delegated

•    Assist clients with mobility, positioning, and transfers when needed

•    Observe clients for changes in condition and promptly report concerns to nursing staff

•    Provide emotional support by building rapport, and supporting clients while they wait for their appointments

Clinic Flow & Client Navigation

•    Support rooming clients and help prepare them for appointments

•    Support waiting room management, including monitoring flow, supporting anxious or distressed clients, and flagging issues to the team

•    Help clients navigate clinic services

•    Escort clients to and from rooms or services as needed

•    Assist with managing appointment flow in collaboration with nursing and front desk staff

Support to Nurses & Providers

•    Assist nurses with delegated tasks and clinical set up

•    Prepare exam rooms between clients (cleaning surfaces, changing linens, restocking supplies)

•    Act as an extra set of hands during busy clinics or high needs situations

•    Communicate clearly with the care team to support safe, efficient care

Supplies, Stocking & Environment

•    Help stock exam rooms, shower areas, and client supply areas

•    Hand out supplies to clients as directed (e.g., hygiene items, wound care supplies, harm reduction supplies where applicable)

•    Monitor inventory levels and flag restocking needs

•    Help maintain a clean, calm, and welcoming clinic environment

Support for Vulnerable Populations

•    Provide trauma-informed care with an understanding of poverty, substance use, mental health challenges, and systemic barriers

•    De-escalate distressed clients using empathy and clear communication.

•    Support client dignity, privacy, and autonomy at all times

•    Follow clinic safety protocols and seek support when situations escalate

Qualifications 

•    Certified Health Care Aide (CLHA) in good standing

•    Experience working in community health, primary care, outreach, or supportive living preferred

•    Comfort working with vulnerable and marginalized populations

•    Active CPR

 

Knowledge/Skills

•    Able to balance numerous demands and conflicting priorities, strong problem-solving skills.

•    Strong communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills within a multidisciplinary team

•    Ability to demonstrate patience and understanding for those with addictions and behavioral disorders.

•    Strong de-escalation skills and ability to remain calm and compassionate in fast paced or emotionally complex situations

•    Excellent understanding of cultural awareness an asset.

•    Understanding and ability to apply principles of Trauma Informed Care and Harm Reduction.
